Insert Molding
Briefing- Client: Electronics Manufacturer
- Project: Controller Housing
- Services: Threaded Brass Insert Overmolding

This customer required an industrial electronics enclosure that included two overmolded threaded brass inserts. Mechanical fasteners would be threaded into these inserts to mount the component. The part required a glass-filled resin for strength, but still needed to be molded within critical flatness tolerances.

Since this product requires high volume production, Melet chose to develop a fully automated process which uses a transaxial robot to load the two brass inserts into the injection mold. The inserts are preheated before inserting into the mold to achieve a perfect match with the elevated mold temperatures. This preheating process minimizes any warpage and unwanted stresses which could occur in the plastic part if a cold insert was overmolded. The insert molding process produces a robust thread feature within a plastic part without the need for unscrewing mechanisms.
